History of Tootsie Rolls
The remarkable history of Tootsie Rolls dates back more than a hundred years. The infamous Leo Hirshfield created these treats in New York back in 1896. However, it wasn’t until 1922 that Tootsie Roll Industries were officially listed on the New York Stock Exchange. It was then that Boston-born Melvin Gordon married into the company and quickly became its CEO. He worked on making the sweet company a success until he passed at the age of 95. After his death in 2015, his widower, Ellen Gorden, took the reins of the business.
